Confessions of a TV Luddite

Okay I admit I am a Luddite when it comes to TV. The past decade, as the hi-def tsunami swept through households with a frenzy of upgrades, I continued to resist and stuck by my trusty tube based Toshiba. Flat screen, Large screen, it did not matter. Then another wave of cable upgrades, DVRs, HD channels all fell on deaf ears. I stuck by my analog cable channels.

However events were conspiring against me. The digital conversion of 2009 forced me to make a choice – upgrade the TV or finally get a set-top box for the old TV. A short time later the last neighborhood Blockbuster abruptly closed up shop leaving us with no alternatives for movies. I had to finally throw in the towel and get us a new set top box, rationalizing the new gadget with the savings in switching our phone to the internet based service. And that summer we got hooked on Netflix when our daughter showed it streaming movies instantly for just $9.99 a month. How could you not get hooked.

So now we are fully equipped to watch movies when we need them, with a limitless range of choices from Netflix, instant Netflix, and a dozen variations of HBO, Cinemax and Showtime. But true to our Luddite roots, we still have not upgraded to a flat screen. And HD and Blue Ray are out there on the distant horizon. But we are thrilled with what we can watch with our limited technology.

So I decided to share this unfettered movie watching on this blog and asked a couple of pals to chime in with their views and reviews also. Hope you enjoy this as much as we will.
